Ancillary task: Final Magazine Review for our Film

Interview with Ricardo Viela - Character Building Profile

We decided to interview our main characters, Ricardo happened to play two of the three main characters, the geek and the hot guy. We interviewed him to find out about his take on the film itself.

So Ricky, what was it like acting in a film?

It was weird, I’ve never done any acting or drama before, but it was fun. I’m quite an eccentric person anyway so it wasn’t really embarrassing being in front of the camera.

How did you find out about the film?

I’m a friend of Emma’s and saw her facebook status online. I replied to that, afterwards it was just general chatting about what the film was about and who I would play. I was just supposed to play the geeky guy at first but because they were short of actors and people pulled out on them at the last second I was happy to try and do both roles as the geek and the other guy. They just told me it would be edited to look like I was looking at myself, which sounded strange, but they did a good job on the editing.

How did you audition for the role?

I didn’t officially audition, I was sort of a last hope of theirs but I came to The Henley College with Emma and met Kym and they decided I’d be good for the role of the geek, playing the other guy didn’t come until later.

Did you have much say about what you got to do in front of the camera?

Mostly I was directed as to what I should do, but I did have some input. It was easier than I thought because as it’s a silent film I didn’t need to learn any lines but some of the acting was difficult to get right. They would say something quite general and I would just try a few different things until we were all happy, it’s probably the reason we had so many takes of scenes.

What were your thoughts of your costumes?

The costumes were all of my own clothes, except for a hoodie borrowed from Emma and a scarf from Kym for the role of the other guy. I got to choose what I wanted to wear. When I came to audition and meet Kym at the college I just decided to come in quite geeky clothes; an old knit jumper, big glasses, a fur hat, and skinny jeans. From then on, anytime I came in for filming I bought with me or wore those clothes. My role as the other guy was just a simple change to Emma’s hoodie and Kym’s scarf, with the hood up, apparently some people can’t tell it’s the same person in the film when they watch it which is good, but I figured they might because of my hair and piercings. I couldn’t take out my lip piercings so unfortunately they had to stay in, I don’t think they mattered too much though.

What were the downsides to acting in this film?

Well it was freezing cold when we were doing the shoots in the evenings and it meant sacrificing my spare time, also getting the train to Henley cost about £6 every time but I made a commitment to act in their film so I came in as much as I could. The girls worked around me and when I could come in which was helpful because I couldn’t always make it the times they wanted me. So really they sacrificed a lot of their time too.

What was the best part about being in the film?

It was a lot of fun to shoot and watching the playbacks of what we’d done and seeing the final product was great. There were also a lot of funny outtakes we did sometimes to kill time and others just because the scenes had gone horribly wrong.

Ancillary task: Final Poster for our Film - 7 Deadly Sins

Prop List for our Film

Short Story for Our Film: 7 Deadly Sins

The scene is set in a wooded area which seems to be deserted. A guy steps out of the car and slowly walks around to the boot where he slowly begins to open it up. As he leans in to the boot there is a young girl tied up in the boot, with tears and mascara running down her face. She begins to panic as he leans in towards her. She tries to escape but the guy pushes her back into the boot with force, where she slightly blacks out.
The full story then begins where we see a young girl called Isabelle in the toilets obsessing about her looks. She applies her foundation, then lipstick, making sure that it’s all done perfectly. Then on to her hair, making sure that every strand is in place. She follows by sorting out her clothes, making sure they are in the right place and looks as good as possible. After finishing making she looks perfect, Isabelle walks into an empty cubicle where she drops her books on the floor, picks up her phone and begins to call someone, then shuts the door so nobody can see its her talking. Isabelle then comes out of the cubicle, washes and dries her hands, grabs her books and vainly checks her appearance again and walks out of the toilets. Isabelle walks down the corridor at college where she catches her reflection, once again checks her appearance and walks back off down the corridor. As she is walking through college a geeky guy bumps into her and they both drop their work on the floor. In disgust Isabelle looks down at the books where the geeky guy is scurrying to pick everything up for her. He sneakily slips his phone number into one of her notebooks. He looks up and hands Isabelle her notebooks. He smiles cheekily as Isabelle looks at him and snatches the books away from him and walks off down the corridor. The geek’s guy watches her walking off. He see’s Isabelle stop and look at her notebook where he has placed his phone number. His heart begins to race when he see’s Isabelle taking out his number and looking at it. She then screws it up in disgust, throws it on the floor and walks off. We see the pain and anguish on the geeky guys face as he witnesses this, and he then walks away.
Isabelle walks into the college canteen where out of the corner of her eye she spots one of the hottest guys in college. She smiles quickly and walks towards the guy. Instead of sitting down and speaking to him, she sits down and ignores him trying to play hard to get which works. As the hot guy catches her out of the corner of his eye and looks at her and smiles. He begins to talk to her; they both laugh and giggle about college life, and the guy asks her to come with him to a party. The hot guy then leans in close to Isabelle to try and kiss her, but once again playing hard to get Isabelle moves her head so that he is looking at her cheek. The guy whispers in to her ear and Isabelle smiles and nods, so he rushes up and walks off. However behind Isabelle, at the canteen window the geeky guy witnesses the whole thin and his heart is broken. He puts his hand on to the window longing for what her cant have, and walks off in upset. The hot guy returns with a drink he has gone and brought Isabelle. He sits down and slides it across into her hand, to show she is grateful she kisses him gently on the cheek to make him wish he was with her, and walks off.
Isabelle after the college day walks off to the party where she has too much to drink and is very drunk. Isabelle then begins to make her way home alone and seems to have lost her belongings which she had taken to the party, which seem to not bother her now. She stumbles down the road in her high heeled shoes, whilst swigging out of her bottle. She stops and takes off her shoes, and carries on walking home, trying to keep in a straight line. Isabelle then constantly drops her shoes many times and forgets to pick them up. As she is walking she becomes paranoid about the footsteps from behind her so she begins to pick up the pace a little. She looks behind her again where a guy is still following her a little faster. She decides to pick up the pace once again. She turns around he is still following her but even faster this time. She panics and begins to run for her life. She runs down the streets as fast as she can, constantly checking behind her, but the guy is still there. She begins to panic and tries to loose him. It doesn’t work. She runs and runs. But she stumbles over and hits the floor. She looks up at the guy, with fear in her eyes.
Isabelle then begins to come around in the boot of a car, tied up and gagged. She can’t scream for help. She then see’s the boot open. Towering over her is the geeky guy with wrath in his eyes. As he leans in to the boot there is a young girl tied up in the boot, with tears and mascara running down her face. She begins to panic as he leans in towards her. She tries to escape but the guy pushes her back into the boot with force. Isabelle watches the geek bend down and picks up a huge branch from the tree, she begins to panic. He then comes back over to the car and angrily rips off the tape off her mouth, so he can hear her speak. He leans the trunk on the car and walks around to the passenger door to put his coat on. When he is out of sight, Isabelle begins to frantically try and undone the tape which is tightly wrapped around her hands. She stops and lays dead still as the geeky guy comes back. He grabs the stick, drags it behind him as he slowly walks away from the car. He grabs it tight. Slowly begins to higher it above his head and brings it down in anger.

Magazine Drafts

We also asked 10 people to tell us which magazine draft would be most effective to follow up on when we write and produce our magazine review, 8/10 people told us they liked these last two drafts, so we decided to do a double page spread the left side with the picture and main review, and the second page with behind the scenes backstage gossip, information and pictures. We did change it a little though, as we did not add in any other dvd reviews, we kept it just about our own film.

Poster Drafts

We asked 10 different people which draft layout they though would be more effective to use when created a poster 7/10 said that they preffered this one because the picture would be the central part and the title and tagline underneath would make them want to read it, rather than it just being a big film title in the middle. hence why we chose to create our poster using this layout.

Uses and Gratification Theory

Uses and gratifications theory is a popular media approach to understanding the needs of consumers; it asks what people do with media. The audience take an active role in interpreting and integrating media into their own lives. The theory suggests that the audience chose media to meet their needs. The most common reason for media usage is:

  1. To gain information= finding out about relevant events, their surroundings, their society, the world, seeking advice, satisfy curiosity, to learn.

  1. To gain a personal identity= reinforce personal values, finding models of behavior, identifying with someone in the media, gaining insight into themselves.

  1. For integration and social interaction= gain social empathy, identify with others, gain sense of belonging, substitute for real-life companionship, being able to connect with family, friends and society.

  1. For entertainment= Escaping their problems, relaxing, aesthetic enjoyment, filling time, emotional release.

We will be using the uses and gratification theory to help us to target our audience by trying to make sure our film includes the four points above. So the audience will gain total satisfaction from our media product.
